A Cheshire Life magazine article titled “Mystery of the Muzzled Bear”, begins with the following sentence:
“With a history stretching back to the Domesday Book and the foundation stone of the current hall allegedly laid by Queen Elizabeth the first, Brereton Hall is a mansion of such history and mystery, great fame and a little infamy.”
I had the good fortune to visit Brereton Hall three times. In 1993, owners, Mary and Derrick Creigh had recently made the decision to close the school that had been part of its history since the 1940’s. However, the Hall and surrounding lands were still intact. The estate has changed significantly in recent years. In this history I have tried to capture the history and grandeur of the very large estate which was home to the Breretons of Sandbach, Cheshire.
